Aluminium Exhibition | What Technological Innovations Will the Aluminum Industry See in 2025?

In 2025, the aluminum industry has made significant strides in technological innovation, with these advancements set to take center stage at the upcoming Aluminium Exhibition. Here are some key areas of innovation:

Inert Anode Technology: This breakthrough replaces traditional carbon anodes with inert anodes in aluminum electrolysis, emitting oxygen instead of greenhouse gases, thus achieving complete decarbonization of the process. For example, RUSAL has successfully employed inert anodes to produce high-purity aluminum with carbon emissions of less than 0.01 tons of CO₂ equivalent per ton of aluminum.

Flexible Load Control in Aluminum Electrolysis: Advancements in technology have enabled ±10% flexible load control in aluminum electrolysis production, improving operational flexibility and overall efficiency.

Innovations in Material Research and Development

Development of New Alloys: The industry has introduced various advanced aluminum alloys to meet specialized requirements across different sectors. For instance, Southwest Aluminum has developed a next-generation 7-series high-strength aluminum alloy ingot, significantly enhancing material performance.

Localization of High-End Aluminum Alloys: A 6xxx aluminum alloy sheet, jointly developed by the China Aluminum Corporation’s Material Research Institute and Southwest Aluminum, has successfully replaced imported sheets in automotive inner panel applications for the first time.

Innovations in Intelligent Manufacturing

Smart Production Systems: The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and artificial intelligence (AI) has facilitated intelligent monitoring and management of production processes, enhancing efficiency and product quality. For example, Qingtongxia Aluminum Industry has completed the development of a “5G+Smart Factory.”

Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Factories: Weiqiao Entrepreneurial Group has established a national-level intelligent manufacturing demonstration factory with proprietary intellectual property rights, realizing smart management of electrolysis cell production.

Innovations in Green and Sustainable Development

Decarbonization and Emission Reduction Technologies: Companies like Sunward Development Co., Ltd. have developed anodes with “high bulk density, low electrical resistance, high strength, homogenization, and low consumption,” effectively reducing carbon emissions by 46 kilograms per ton of aluminum.

Comprehensive Utilization of Red Mud: Continuous technological advancements have significantly increased the utilization and recycling rates of red mud. In the first half of 2024 alone, 7.2 million tons were utilized, with annual utilization expected to exceed 13 million tons and a recycling rate surpassing 12%.

Recycled Aluminum Technology: Ongoing progress in aluminum recycling technologies has facilitated circular economy initiatives. By 2025, the use of recycled aluminum in wrought aluminum alloys is projected to exceed 50%.
