A Milestone in Aluminium Recycling
The development of this new aluminium skin alloy marks another significant milestone in JLR’s long-standing partnership with Novelis, a leader in aluminium recycling. Their collaboration began in 2008 with the launch of REALCAR, Europe’s first closed-loop recycling system.
This initiative enables aluminium scrap generated during vehicle production to be collected, recycled by Novelis, and reintroduced into new car bodies, significantly reducing reliance on primary aluminium, which is more energy-intensive to produce. The transition to Novelis Advanz 5F-s5754 RC, an alloy made entirely from recycled materials, began with the Jaguar XE and has since expanded across JLR’s entire product lineup.
“This achievement is part of the continuous efforts of our passionate and dedicated teams to research and develop more sustainable solutions for our next generation of luxury vehicles—without compromising quality or performance. It is a remarkable result and a perfect demonstration of how collaboration enables us to drive innovation and advance circularity,”
— Andrea Debbane, Chief Sustainability Officer, JLR
Revolutionizing the Recycling Process
A critical element of this initiative is the dedicated round-trip rail service between Germany and the UK, designed to enhance both efficiency and sustainability. Compared to traditional road transport, this closed-loop system has:
- Saved over USD 1 million
- Reduced CO₂e emissions by 80%
JLR’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond materials. The company is making major investments in electrification and decarbonization, aiming for an all-electric future:
- By 2030, every model in the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender collections will have a fully electric version.
- Jaguar will transition into a fully electric brand.
- Through its Future Skills Programme, JLR has upskilled over 25,000 employees and partners in electrification and digital technologies to support this transformation.
Novelis’ Commitment to a Greener Future
“Sustainability has been at the core of Novelis since our founding. Our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship defines who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Since 2016, Novelis has:
- Reduced absolute carbon emissions by 27% across Scopes 1, 2, and 3
- Achieved an average of 63% recycled content in its aluminium rolled products”
— Novelis
By 2030, Novelis aims to increase recycled content to 75% through strategic partnerships and continuous technological advancements. A major breakthrough includes the successful hydrogen-powered recycling furnace trial at the Latchford plant in Warrington, UK, which reduces CO₂e emissions by up to 90%.
Driving Towards a Sustainable Future
With cutting-edge innovations in aluminium recycling, electrification, and sustainable manufacturing, JLR and Novelis are setting new industry benchmarks. As the automotive sector accelerates toward a circular economy, partnerships like this demonstrate how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand—paving the way for a greener, more efficient future.
