Aluminium Expo | Oyster Cooler Breaks New Ground with Speira's VERSA 8006 Aluminium Solution

Ian Sandmæl, co-founder and product designer of Oyster Performance Cooler, aimed to create a modern cooler using sustainable and recyclable materials such as aluminium. His priority was to ensure that the cooler was lightweight and well insulated, so he developed the Oyster Tempo cooler, using Speira's VERSA 8006 aluminium solution.

According to Aluminium Expo, the VERSA 8006 aluminium solution is regarded as the world's first high-performance cooler and played a decisive role in its production. Sandmæl believes that vacuum insulation technology is the key to achieving excellent cooling performance. However, the development and production of vacuum-insulated coolers for food and beverages faced a number of practical challenges.

After six years of dedicated research and development, Oyster's aluminium coolers have made a breakthrough, achieving the ideal harmony between space, weight, robustness, and thermal efficiency. Speira has been supplying top-quality rolled aluminium in the VERSA 8006 material type for the Oyster Tempo coolers.

The Oyster Tempo coolers feature a smooth bare aluminium surface that is visually modern in design, while also excelling in durability and robustness. It can withstand minor dents and scratches without compromising its functionality, both in everyday use and when traveling. In addition, it is designed for easy replacement and repair of individual components. Even at the end of its life cycle, aluminium remains a valuable raw material, underlining its sustainability. Unlike plastics, aluminium is highly recyclable as it can be melted down and reintroduced into the production cycle. The Oyster Tempo cooler is a pioneer in fully recyclable coolers, marking a significant step forward in sustainability.

The storage tray and lid form an airtight vacuum chamber, and the aluminium shell acts as an impenetrable barrier against gas permeation, maintaining the vacuum permanently. Aluminium is one of the few materials that can ensure this level of protection. The use of aluminium also reduces the wall thickness, making the design more space-efficient. This allows aluminium coolers to cool faster and stay cooler for longer, providing more storage space for drinks and food. Oyster coolers can transport up to 36 cans of drinks, maximizing practicality.
