Aluminium Trade Fair | Hydro Invests $85 Million to Expand Aluminium Recycling Plant in Henderson, USA
According to Hydro's official website, the company has decided to invest $85 million in building a new casting line at its Aluminium recycling plant in Henderson, Kentucky, USA. The new production line, operational in 2026, will supply high-quality recycled Aluminium automotive components to the U.S. automotive market.
Hydro President and CEO Eivind Kallevik announced this investment decision during a meeting with the Governor of Kentucky. The investment is supported by tax incentives from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA). The new casting line will add 28,000 tons (62 million pounds) of Aluminium capacity and strengthen Hydro Henderson's position as a low-carbon Aluminium producer for the North American automotive industry.
Hydro previously announced a $15 million investment to install new baghouse and homogenization equipment at the Hydro Henderson recycling plant. This project, nearing completion, will help Hydro Henderson produce more advanced alloys using post-consumer recycled scrap, thereby reducing its carbon footprint.
The new casting line will utilize HyForge technology, successfully implemented at Hydro's main plant in Husnes, Norway, and the recycling plant in Rackwitz, Germany. According to the Aluminium Trade Fair, HyForge forging technology provides customers with Aluminium cast-forged billets of smaller diameter compared to traditional billets. These can be directly forged into high-quality automotive components (such as wheel suspension parts) and other products, bypassing further processes such as extrusion or homogenization.
