Aluminium Expo|Hydro Will Purchase Processed Aluminum Scrap from Sims Alumisource for its North American Extrusion Plants

The Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro is considering purchasing processed aluminum scrap for its North American extrusion plants. For this purpose, Hydro has signed a multi-year agreement with Sims Alumisource. Hydro is the largest producer of aluminum billets in North America, with 12 recycling facilities across the United States and Canada.

The recent agreement will provide Hydro's North American extrusion business with an additional 36,000 tons of post-consumer aluminum scrap. Hydro and Sims Alumisource have a long-standing collaboration in refining and processing post-consumer aluminum scrap into furnace-ready material for extrusion billets.

Using more post-consumer aluminum scrap to produce extrusion billets will bring Hydro closer to its commitment to establishing a circular economy and a sustainable future in the aluminum industry.

Charlie Straface, President of Hydro Extrusion North America, stated, "Hydro is committed to reducing environmental impact across the entire value chain, with a focus on producing aluminum products with high recycled content and low carbon footprint. By sourcing more high-quality post-consumer scrap for our recycling operations, we are helping to drive the circular economy and making a direct contribution to Hydro's sustainability goals."

According to Aluminium Expo, Sims Alumisource is part of Sims Metal, the global metal recycling division of Sims Limited, employing advanced technology to process scrap, thereby improving the melt efficiency for Hydro.

"This agreement enables Sims Alumisource to support Hydro's circularity and emission reduction goals, while also supporting our own company's goal of creating a world without waste, protecting our planet. It's also an exciting opportunity to continue expanding our business in North America while demonstrating how Sims Alumisource can provide innovative solutions to meet our customers' demands for quality and sustainability," said Rob Thompson, Global Chief Commercial Officer of Sims Metal.
