aluminium show | Aluminum Usage in Light Vehicles in North America to Exceed 36% by 2030

Predicted demands from top automobile manufacturers and primary suppliers suggest a significant increase in the use of aluminum in the electric vehicle sector. The recently released "2023 North American Light Vehicle Aluminum Content Study and Outlook" reveals a significant growth in aluminum usage in new electric vehicles in North America by 2030. The report indicates that the demand for more sustainable transportation will drive an increase in the average aluminum content per vehicle in North America. It's forecasted that the aluminum usage in light vehicles will reach 252 kilograms by 2030, an increase of approximately 44 kilograms compared to 2020.

Mike Keown, Chairman and CEO of the American Aluminum Association's Transportation Committee, stated, “Consumers are demanding more sustainable, electrified, and technologically advanced cars and light trucks, and automotive manufacturers are responding with a range of innovations.” All of these are made possible by high-strength, lightweight, infinitely recyclable aluminum. The aluminum industry is committed to ensuring that consumers experience the performance and environmental benefits of aluminum, as more vehicles will adopt aluminum designs in the coming years. Strengthening collaboration with automakers will realize the vision set forth in the aluminum industry's 10-year roadmap. With the ongoing development of large castings and closed-loop recycling, aluminum producers remain key partners in helping automakers achieve positive carbon-neutral goals."

This report reflects data collected over an eight-month period through interviews with leading automakers, tier-1 suppliers, and aluminum producer companies, leading to the following key conclusions and predictions:

The prevalence of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) will dramatically change the landscape of light vehicles in North America. The production share of pure electric vehicles increased from just under 3% in 2020 to about 6% in 2022, nearly doubling. By 2030, the production share of pure electric vehicles, which have a higher average aluminum intensity, is expected to exceed 36%.

The trend towards higher aluminum content in larger vehicles continues. Consumer preference for larger vehicles persists, contributing to the growth of aluminum usage.
